Nestled in the lush rolling hills of southwest Appanoose County stands the remaining edifice of the Franklin Baptist Church. This simple white framed church building along with the gravestones of those who lived in that community are all that is noticeably left of the village of Livingston, Iowa.
A familial patriarch from Ohio by the name of Benjamin Barney came with his family to what is now southwest Appanoose county in 1853 where he claimed 320 acres as compensation for his military service during the War of 1812. Barney and the other pioneers who began to settle in the area found enough water and timber to sustain a village. It was quickly decided that the village should be named after the community's most prominent leader, Livingston Parker, the son-in-law of Benjamin Barney.
